The biggest design challenge that we were faced with for this project, was to accommodate a 4 bedroom house with 3 garages on a very steep slope. The house had to be built on 3 levels, with lots of cutting and filling to be done before any building work could commence. Access from the street was difficult, and obviously “the higher the better the view”, hence the main living area and master bedroom in the highest position to overlook the ocean.
The top level is built with 2 bedrooms as well as the living area, opening up onto an enclosed courtyard with a braai area, which really protects the house from the nasty south easter wind.
Our initial proposal was a white plastered house with more cantilevered areas, but due to budget constraints and maintenance issues, the client insisted to use facebrick and brick columns to support the concrete floor slab overhangs. Ugh!
This project is currently under construction.
